Geocache Description:

Tunnel Brae is an excellent viewing point which overlooks the village of Castlerock, the mouth of the River Bann and the town of Portstewart. When visibility is good you can see the Scottish island of Islay and beyond to the Paps of Jura. Not far away is the Black Glen, with scenic walks, and part of the Ulster Way.

Castlerock is an attractive small village located in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close by is the magnificent National Trust property of Downhill Demesne and Mussenden Temple. Tunnel Brae is the hill at the western end of the beach under which runs one of two tunnels on the scenic railway line between Coleraine and Londonderry, once described by Michael Palin as "one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world". There are two viewing points on Tunnel Brae, both with car parking. The upper level also contains a picnic area. A terrace of twelve labourers' cottages known locally as The Twelve Apostles can be seen from this car park. These architecturally attractive black stone cottages were built in 1882 and are now listed buildings used as holiday homes. At the end of the rutted path which runs past these cottages is the entrance to the Black Glen, signposted at the bottom of the brae as the Ulster Way. The cache is a micro, the log is extremely small, and you will need a pen to sign it. Any logged finds without a corresponding signature/initials on the log will be deleted.
