THE STORY:
Continued from L&C Ep1. The Criminal's Cache (Pioneer's Park) ...

The boys couldn’t believe they had actually stumbled across a real criminal. What they had just found meant one thing.

He was on the run.

“We have to follow him.” Lanny said as he shut the lid and looked up toward the path the man had taken.

“What?!?” Coe gasped. “Are you crazy?”

“Seriously Coe, come on. We can’t let him just get away. What if he’s going to try to hurt someone?” Lanny was nervous, but confident. They needed to try to do the right thing.

“Why can’t we just go get help?” Coe asked.

“Because, he’s on the move right now. If we don’t follow him and at least see what he’s doing, he could get away and do something terrible! We need to act now!” Lanny started to move in the direction the man had gone.

Coe hesitated, but unable to come up with a good enough reason to argue his point further, he begrudgingly followed his older brother.

They followed the man from a fairly safe distance. He stayed in the thick forest near the river, obviously trying to keep from being seen by anyone. Every once in a while he would stop and pull something out of his pocket and then look around. He was obviously trying to find something.

Whenever he stopped, the boys had to stop as well, being extra careful not to crunch any leaves or snap any twigs. The slightest noise might signal the man to their presence and being alone in the woods with a real criminal did not sound like fun.

Finally, the man slowed down and followed a fence and approached a specific tree. He looked it up and down a few times and then seemed to find what he was looking for, positioned on the tree somewhat facing the boys. They couldn’t exactly see what he was doing, but they saw him slide out a small canister, and remove a map or something from it.

He unrolled it, studied it for a moment, looked off towards the northeast, then rolled it back up and placed it back into the canister. After that he was off again.

Lanny was torn. They meant to follow the man, but now he wanted to know what was in the canister. He figured that whatever was in there had given the man his next destination, so maybe they could both see what was in it and still follow him. They waited until the sounds of the man’s steps were faint and then made for the tree. Coe must have been curious too because he didn’t say a word.

They got there together and were confused. Nothing stood out as an obvious container for the canister. Frustrated, Lanny scowled angrily at the tree. He figured it would be right there waiting for them, but based on the place where the criminal had hid his handcuffs, it must be well placed.

“What’s that?” Coe suddenly said, breaking the silence. He was pointing at the tree. Suddenly, Lanny saw it too, a marking of some kind. He inspected it for a moment, grabbed the object, and pulled hard. He almost fell back when the lid came off so easily. By the time he recovered, he looked up and saw the canister inside.

This was crazy. Only someone with something serious to hide would go to this much trouble to conceal things. They opened the canister and unrolled the map found within. It took Lanny a moment but then he realized what it was. He quickly rolled the map back up, put it and the canister back, and then replaced the lid.

“I know what where he went.” This was all he said as he grabbed Coe’s hand and headed in the same direction as the criminal.
