Geocache Description:

The parking area is located near the confluence of Brays Bayou and Buffalo Bayou/Houston Ship Channel. This location serves as the eastern terminus of the Brays Bayou Hike and Bike Trail. The area on the west bank of Buffalo Bayou, south of Brays Bayou was first settled sometime before 1825. In 1826 a survey was completed for a town that would be called Harrisburg. The town was serving as the provisional capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836 when it was mostly burned by the advancing troops of Santa Anna. It recovered from the sacking and went on the be formally incorporated in 1837. The town prospered from the commerce moving along Buffalo Bayou and the state's first railroad, the Buffalo Bayou Brazos and Colorado. Nevertheless, as time went by the town was overshadowed by its neighbor to the north and it was eventually annexed by Houston in 1926.
