< The Waki-Honjin >
A Honjin was an inn for the Tokugawa government officials, located in shukubas (= post stations) during the Edo (Tokugawa) period. It accommodated only those officials.
When, however, Honjin was fully occupied by a group of officials, another inn that had similar quality but was usually used by general travellers was also used for the stay of other government officials. This alternative accommodation was called Waki-Honjin that literally means Sub-Honjin.
Although the real Waki-Honjin at Nakatsugawa-juku has already been lost, its most luxury room "Joudan-no Ma" is restored here and open to the visitors of Nakasendo Historical Museum next door.

The cache is hidden in the back of a removable wooden 'part' which you don't usually think is movable -- but, Yes, you can! Never yank, however. Gently remove it with a little force.
It contains only a log sheet. Bring a pen with you.
Attention: There is no pedestrian walkway along the street. Pay much attention to the traffic!

＜脇本陣＞
本陣とは、徳川幕府の官吏や参勤交代の大名一行だけが止まることを許された宿所です。しかし、一行の人数が多かったり、複数の官吏が到着して投宿できなかったりした場合、同じような格式を持った一般の旅人用の旅籠が公務のために流用されることがありました。これを脇本陣と言っています。
中津川宿の脇本陣は既になくなっていますが、その上段の間が復元されており、隣接する中山道歴史資料館の入館者に公開されています。
