Geocache Description:

A cache at one of the points of interest on the Baviaanskloof route.

The Winston Le Roux Cable way was designed and built by Winston le Roux in 1967 across the 386 meter deep gorge between the two main farms, Good hope and Enkeldoorn to reduce travelling time from 3 1/2 hours to 12 minutes.

It has a span of 410 meters and had a carrying capacity of five tons.  As far as is known it is the only private cable-way built on the continent of Africa, if not in the world, and that, by an ordinary young farmer and his regular farm workers.

The system was used to transport farm produce (wheat, potatoes, vegetables and livestock) between the two areas.

The initials "W le R" and the date "1967" are marked in the concrete around the massive anchor pole.

Winston has written a book titled "Beautiful Baviaanskloof: Building the Cable way" which is available on Amazon

Access into the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is via Patensie or Willowmore. There is a conservation fee payable. The cache is not accessible for sedan cars. Depending on road conditions access could be limited to 4 x 4 vehicles only. For more information go to the Baviaans Tourism website  http://www.baviaans.co.za/page/information_baviaanskloof

Please note that there are buffalo in the reserve that can get aggressive. They are not normally seen in this area.

The cache is a clip lock in a bag made of camouflaged material and is placed under some rocks.
