Gruta das Encantadas, the Encantadas grotto, is a must-visit on Ilha do Mel, as it is the most important natural heritage there. It is located in the south of the island. A walkway leads you to the entrace, so it is easy getting there.
How was this grotto formed? The hill, in which you find the grotto, is formed by a type of rock called migmatite. But in between it is divided by a shaft of blackrock, which is called diabase. Diabase it not as resistant as migmatite, therefore by the constant action of the sea over thousands of years it was washed away and the cave was formed.
Ilha do Mel is younger than 550 million years, which in earth history is very young.
Some background information of the rocks:
Migmatite = this rocks forms under extreme heat, which causes pre-existing rocks to melt. When it cools down and recrystallizes a mixture of the unmelted metamorphic part and the recrystallized igneous part is created - that is the migmatite.
Migmatite comprises of:
quartz (mostly transparent white color)
potassium feldspar (mostly silver/white color)
plagioclase (mostly white/gray color)
biotite (mostly dark brown color)
hornblende (mostly black color)
epidote (mostly grey/green color)

Diabase is one of the most common rocks in Brazil. It is a magmatic rock of black color. The volcanic magma gets into fractures of other rocks, cools down and forms the diabase rock.
The legend:
The children of two enemy tribes, Jurema and Cauã, met on the beach. The passion was at first sight. To escape the war, they met in the hiding of witch Maribel. There the romance blossomed and they even were married in secret, with the witch's blessings. But the secret was not eternal. Their families found out.
The father of Jurema also had his wizard powers. When he found out about the romance and realized that it was too late to stop the wedding, he put a curse: "The Jurema daughters can not marry. After birth, they will turn into mermaids with bloodlust and kill all men that approach. "
Jurema and Cauã fell into deep sadness, knowing of the curse powers. For three nights they cried for the mercy of Tupa. The merciful God had mercy on the couple's sorrow. "You did not have a honeymoon, but I'll give you a Honey Island," said Tupa, through thoughts.
This, however, did not save the couple from the curse. Their seven daughters were born very beautiful. But when they reached adolescence they were being turned into bloodthirsty mermaids. Cauã and Jurema tried to hide their daughters in a cave in the south of the island.
Some sailors say that to this day, those who approach the encantadas grotto during the early morning, can hear the treacherous chant of the daughters of Cauã and Jurema.

As colinas de terras baixas costeiras do Paraná e Ilha do Mel são formados por gnaisses pré-cambrianas e migmatitos mais novo de 550 milhões de anos. Estas rochas são cortadas por diques de diabásio de 130 milhões de anos de idade, cuales han sido colocadas quando o Oceano Atlântico Sul começou a se espalhar.
Gruta das Encantadas, situada na parte sul da Ilha, é o patrimônio natural mais importante da Ilha do Mel. O morro da Gruta, formado por um tipo de rocha chamado migmatito é dividido por um veio de rocha negra, o diabásio. A Gruta se formou pela ação do mar sobre o diabásio, menos resistente que o migmatito. Para facilitar o acesso, foi construída uma passarela que leva até a sua entrada.
Migmatite é uma rocha que é uma mistura de rocha metamórfica e rocha ígnea. Temperaturas extremas são necesarios para formar migmatidos, o material rocha derrete parcialmente neste proceso e depois recristaliza numa rocha ignea.
Migmatitos muitas vezes parecem tão firmemente, incoerentemente dobradas (pregas ptygmatic) dikelets, veias e segregações de composição granítica de cor clara chamado leucossoma, dentro anfibólio de cor escura e biotite material rico chamado melanossoma.
Migmatito é constituída por:
quartzo
feldspato potássico
plagioclase
biotite
hornblenda
epídoto

Diabásio e uma das rochas mais comuns do Brasil. E uma rocha magmática, constituída do minerales como plagioclásio e piroxênio. Diabásio e de cor negra e textura granular fina o grosseira.
O diabásio se forma quando um magma de composição basáltica é injetado em fraturas e diáclases nas rochas encaixantes.
A lenda:
Filhos de duas tribos inimigas, a índia Jurema e o índio Cauã se avistaram na praia. A paixão foi à primeira vista. Para fugir da guerra, se encontravam no esconderijo da bruxa Maribel. Lá o romance floresceu e lá mesmo se casaram em segredo, com as bênçãos da feiticeira. Mas o segredo não foi eterno. As famílias descobriram.
O pai da índia Jurema também tinha seus poderes de feiticeiro. Ao descobrir o romance e percebendo que era tarde para impedir o casamento, lançou uma maldição: “As filhas de Jurema não poderão casar. Depois de nascer, vão se transformar em sereias com sede de sangue e matarão todos os homens que se aproximem”.
Jurema e Cauã caíram em profunda tristeza, sabendo dos poderes da maldição. Durante três noites clamaram pela piedade de Tupã. O Deus bondoso se compadeceu da tristeza do casal. “Vocês não tiveram uma Lua de Mel, mas eu lhes darei uma Ilha de Mel”, respondeu Tupã, através de pensamentos.
O presente, porém, não livrou o casal da maldição. Suas sete filhas nasceram muito belas. Mas ao chegarem à adolescência transformavam-se em sereias sanguinárias. Cauã e Jurema tentaram esconder as filhas em uma gruta no sul da ilha.
Alguns marinheiros contam que até hoje, aqueles que se aproximam da Gruta das Encantadas, durante as madrugadas, conseguem ouvir o canto traiçoeira das filhas de Cauã e Jurema.
