Treasure Hunt - A Lesson Plan Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

poeju: Alas, my job has become too hectic for me to keep up with this ambitious hide. At the time I figured I'd have plenty of time to keep up with its maintenance. Things changed for me and it would be unfair of me to even try to keep it up.

It's a good spot, so hopefully someone else can make a good one here. Good luck!

Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates. This Treasure Hunt was designed to be used with my classes of sixth graders but can be enjoyed by students and cachers of any age.  The goals are to introduce both modern and traditional technologies and methods of navigation, while also exposing students to activities that can be done in nature.  This 10 stage multi uses compass sighting and GPS coordinates to navigate around Elmer E. Raymond park and playground.

You will need to know a bit about compasses to complete this cache.  Potentially, one could use a GPSr and project waypoints, but when using relative location minor errors in accuracy can potentially cause large errors as you go (though the easy clues should help there).  All bearings are given are true, so be sure to adjust for declination.  When teaching, I keep an up to date topo handy, a simple internet search can also help.

Start with the treasure map provided.  Be wary the bearer of flags is a large metal object that may cause some magnetic deviation in traditional compasses, my suggestion would be to stand a few feet to the north when shooting your first bearing.  From there the best place to shoot a bearing is from where you found the clue.  Any distances are given in paces.  I'm a firm believer in a traditional full stride pace (two steps), this is navigation not golf.  Everyone has their own pace, but it should get you close enough to make the find with the clue (you could probably figure out some of them without bothering with the pacing to be honest).

The micros consist mostly of silver bison tubes and soda preforms, with two notable exceptions.  The final is a traditional lock&lock.
