Realising he had lost sight of the coast, and possible enemies were between him and his ship, Erik remembers tales told to him by his father about the cunning ways of the God Loki, and decides to leave markers in case he has to quickly retreat to the boat. He hides them from prying eyes in nooks and crannies obvious only to him and his men.
