Name
Where the name Kotli comes from? The people living in the area of Hum, Humstina, believe that the name originates from the fact that the river bed is full of holes that remind of cauldrons that were used for cooking on the fireplaces (in Croatian kotao). The river flows from one »cauldron« to other, over a tall rock, and into a natural pool called Slap.
The village has maintained its current appearance since the 18th century, or even earlier. There are approximately 15 houses still standing, which are bigger and prettier than the houses in nearby villages and hamlets. The conditions for such architecture partly lie in the stable income of well known and respected local craftsmen. The houses on the main street are evidence of better times, when there were a lot of people living in the village.
History facts
Although it consists of only fifteen or so house, the old village of Kotli is one of the most attractive vacation resorts in central Istria. It is located east of Buzet in the valley of the River Rečina, which after connecting with the rivulet Draga, continues to flow as the River Mirna, the longest and most known Istrian river. Rečina is the official name of the river, by which it is marked on most maps, but the people who live in the valley call it Mirna. In autumn, when the snow starts to melt on Učka and Ćićarija, and after the rains, it fills with water, and during the summer, after long droughts, it can completely disappear.
Till the 2nd World War there was no primary school in the village, so the children had to walk several kilometers to the school in Hum, which was established in the mid 19th century. During the years the school was closed, the children went to school in Buzet. Through the valley of the River Rečina, and all the way to Buzet, there is an underpinned path which the children took to go to school, and the villagers to take their products to the annual June fair in Sveti Ivan near Buzet.
In past centuries, Kotli was the biggest and wealthiest village in the Hum area – Humstina, with more than hundred inhabitants. After the 2nd World War, as has happened in many villages and towns in central Istria, a lot of people left. The villagers of Kotli went to Buzet, and areas around Poreč and Kopar, and tried to make ends meet there, while the time has taken its toll on the abandoned village house. In the 1970's census, it was recorded that there are still 14 people living in Kotli, but soon they left too, and the village remained empty and dead. Today, Kotli is alive only »on paper« – in the last census in 2001, it was recorded that there is only one inhabitant.

Der Name
Woher stammt der Name "Kotli"? Unter den Einwohnern des Städtchen Hum und seiner Umgebung ist die Meinung verbreitet, dass sich das Wasser im steinigen Trog des Flusses, in kleineren oder größeren Hohlräumen befindet, die ihrer Form nach dem Kessel (kroatisch ‚kotao') ähnlich sind, bzw. den Gefäßen, die in ländlichen Haushalten für das Kochen im Herd benutzt wurden. In platzenden Wasserfällchen gießt das Wasser aus einem Kessel in den anderen aus, einen hohen Felsen entlang, und sammelt sich in einem großen natürlichen Becken, das unter dem Namen "Slap" bekannt ist.
Das heutige Aussehen des Dorfes stammt aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Etwa 15 Häuser, die größer und schöner als die in Nachbardörfern sind, sind erhalten geblieben. Die Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung einer solchen Bauart war auch stabiles Einkommen, da Kotljani, wie die Einheimischen genannt werden, bekannte Handwerker waren. Die Hauptstraße entlang ist eine Reihe von Stockwerkhäusern zu finden, die von besseren Zeiten zeugen, als das Dorf mehr Einwohner hatte.
Aus der Geschichte
Obwohl es in diesem alten Dorf nur etwa 15 Häuser gibt, zählt Kotli zu den attraktivsten Urlaubsorten in Mittelistrien. Es liegt östlich von Buzet, im grasigen Tal des Flusses Rečina. Rečina mündet in den Nebenfluss Draga, und zusammen fließen sie weiter als Mirna, der längste und bekannteste Fluss Istriens. Rečina ist der offizielle Name, unter dem dieses Flüsschen in meisten geographischen Karten bezeichnet wird; doch wird es von den Einheimischen Mirna genannt. Im Frühling, nach der Schneeschmelze auf den Bergen Učka und Ćićarija und langem Regen, schwillt der Fluss an, während am Ende des Sommers, nach einer langdauernden Dürre, der Fluss austrocknen kann.
Bis zum zweiten Weltkrieg gab es im Dorf keine Grundschule, so dass die Kinder in die ein paar Kilometer entfernte Schule in Hum zu Fuß gingen. Vor der Gründung der Grundschule in Hum Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, und in den Jahren, wenn der Unterricht in der Schule nicht stattfand, besuchten die Schüler aus Kotli die Schule in Buzet. Bis Buzet, durch das Tal des Flusses Rečina, führt ein alter Weg. Diese Route nahmen die Kinder, wenn sie zur Schule gingen, aber auch die Erwachsene, da sie ihre Produkte in Sveti Ivan neben Buzet zum Jahrmarkt, der in Juni stattfand, brachten.
Früher war das Dorf Kotli das größte und wirtschaftlich entwickelteste Dorf in der Umgebung von Hum. Zu einigen Zeiten lebten dort mehr als hundert Menschen. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg traf das Dorf das gleiche Schicksal wie viele andere kleine Dörfer und Städte in Innen-Istrien – die Einheimischen begannen auszuwandern. Die Einwohner aus Kotli gingen zu Buzet und Umgebung von Poreč und Kopar, um sich dort ihre Existenz aufzubauen, und ihre Häuser gingen allmählich zugrunde. Nach der Volkszählung aus den 1970er Jahren lebten im Dorf noch 14 Menschen, aber bald gingen sie auch weg, und Kotli blieb leerer und toter Ort. Heute lebt das Dorf wieder, aber nur "auf dem Papier" – nach der letzten Volkszählung aus dem Jahre 2001 hat das Dorf einen Einwohner.

Ime
Otkud selu ime Kotli? Među stanovništvom Humštine rašireno je mišljenje da ime dolazi od toga što je voda tu u kamenom koritu rječice iz lokala manje ili veće udubine koje oblikom podsjećaju na
kotle – posude kakve su se u seoskim domaćinstvima koristile za kuhanje u ognjištima. U prštavim slapićima voda se prelijeva iz jednog »kotla« u drugi te se na posljetku slijeva niz visoku stijenu i sakuplja u velikom prirodnom bazenu zvanom Slap.
Današnji je izgled selo poprimilo u 18. stoljeću, a možda i nešto ranije. Sačuvano je oko 15 kuća koje su veće i ljepše od kuća u okolnim selima i zaseocima. Uvjeti za razvoj takvoga graditeljstva su djelomično u stabilnim prihodima koje su Kotljani ubirali kao nadaleko poznati zanatlije. Duž glavne ulice niz je katnica koje svjedoče o boljim vremenima, kada je u selu živjelo mnogo ljudi.
Iz povijesti
Iako se sastoji od samo petnaestak kuća, staro selo Kotli jedno je od najprivlačnijih izletišta u središnjoj Istri. Smješteno je istočno od Buzeta, u travnatoj dolini Rečine, čije vode, nakon spajanja s pritokom Dragom, dalje teku kao Mirna, najduža i najpoznatija istarska rijeka. Rečina je službeno ime pod kojim je rječica označena na većini zemljovida, ali stanovnici koji uz nju žive zovu je Mirna. Kada se u proljeće na Učki i Ćićariji počnu topiti snjegovi te nakon obilnih kiša, njezinim koritom poteče bujica vode, a krajem ljeta, nakon dugotrajnih suša, može posve presušiti.
Do Drugoga svjetskog rata u selu nije bilo osnovne škole pa su djeca pješačila do nekoliko kilometara udaljene škole u Humu. Prije nego što je sredinom 19. stoljeća osnovana škola u Humu te u godinama kada je prekidala s radom kotljanski su đaci pohađali nastavu u Buzetu. Dolinom Rečine do Buzeta vodi stari podzidani put kojim su djeca odlazila u školu, a odrasli Kotljani vozili svoje proizvode u Sveti Ivan pokraj Buzeta na godišnji sajam koji se održavao u lipnju.
U prošlim su stoljećima Kotli bili najveće i gospodarski najjače selo u Humštini. U nekim je razdobljima u njemu živjelo i više od stotinu ljudi. Nakon Drugoga svjetskog rata zadesila ga je sudbina mnogih malih sela i gradova u unutrašnjosti Istre čije se stanovništvo počelo iseljavati. Kotljani su otišli živjeti u Buzet, okolicu Poreča i Kopra te tamo pokušali osigurati opstanak, a kuće su, napuštene i prepuštene zubu vremena, počele propadati. Popisom stanovništva iz 70-ih godina zabilježeno je da u selu živi još 14 mještana, ali i oni su se uskoro raselili, a Kotli su ostali prazno i mrtvo mjesto. Danas su Kotli oživjeli iako samo »na papiru« – posljednji popis stanovništva iz 2001. bilježi da u selu živi jedan stanovnik.
