Geocache Description:

A small traditional cache placed in a remote back country location with historical and geological significance.

Getting to this cache is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. The cache location is at least 5 hours from Flora Carpark and at least 4 hours from Cobb Valley. Unless you are ultra-fit, it will most likely require an overnight stay. The two closest huts are Balloon Hut and Salisbury Lodge. These are both really nice serviced huts, requiring 3 back country hut tickets per person per night - or a back country hut pass.

In 1863, Thomas Salisbury was the first European to find the Tableland. Gold was discovered there in 1865. Diggers braved harsh conditions in their search but within a few years interest had waned. In 1886, 1909 and the 1930s gold fever spread again, but always with little success as the area was never rich. In the clearing where Flora Hut now stands, Edward’s Store was set up in tents to provide services to the diggers. Stock were driven up to the Tableland and slaughtered at Butchertown, just west of Salisbury Lodge. There is a sign on a tree marking this site. West of Butchertown, beyond the Leslie valley turnoff, the Balloon Hut Track descends through Cundy Creek and passes Bishops’ Cave. Two Nelson bishops, at different times late in the 19th century, camped here and preached to the diggers.

The cave is about 2 minutes off the track. When I visited it, there was a small label stuck on an animal trap showing the way. Hardly a sturdy sign, so I can't be sure of it's permanence. There is a faint trail to the cave from the main track. In case the 'sign' has gone when you visit the area, when you are approaching the cache location note the following. Approaching from Salisbury Lodge, the main track emerges from the scrubby forest briefly and then turns 90 degress to the left - the trail to the cave is 90 degrees to the right. Approaching from Balloon Hut, the main track therefore makes a 90 degree turn to the right, and the trail to the cave is straight ahead.

If you do make this trek - be safe and be prepared - have all the gear you might need for very changeable, alpine weather conditions - and let someone know your intentions before you head out the door.

The cache is a 200ml Sistema container, with log, pencil, eraser, sharpener and room for small swaps. Please replace cache as found.
