Lakes of Manitoba

Manitoba is known for being the land of 100,000 lakes.  This is the result of Lake Agassiz which covered much of the province after the glaciers retreated.  Our lakes cover 15.6% of the province's total area. 

This is what you can expect on this trail:  The caches in this trail are all named after lakes in our great province.  Cache containers are micros and larger.  There will be a mix of container types and some will be winter friendly and some won't. For this reason there won't be a winter attribute at all because of snow levels on the sides of the roads in the winter will vary.  Some of the caches will require you to walk thru ditches so depending on time of year and water levels rubber boots might be a good idea.

Manitoba Memorial Lakes:

In July 1947 Manitoba named 25 lakes after 26 men who lost their lives on active service in the Second World War.

These were:

1. Mackie Lake, named after FO. A. M. Mackie of Winnipeg.
2. McMillan Lake, named after FO. L. McMillan.
3. Vandekerckhove Lake, named after >WO. Abram Arbour.
4. Tenklei Lake, named after Sgt. Edward Stanley Tenklei.
5. Suttie Lake, named after Capt. James M. Suttie.
6. Craig Lake, named after FO. J. Craig, of Winnipeg.
7. Chepil Lake, named after WO. M. Chepil, of Winnipeg.
8. Dunphy Lake, named after FL. R. J. Dunphy, of Winnipeg.
9. Wilmot Lake, named after SL. B. E. Wilmot.
10. Counsell Lake, named after Major R. R. Counsell.
11. Story Lake, named after Lance-Cpl. Rupert R. Story.
12. Two Tod Lake, named after twin brothers Douglas and WO. Ernest Tod.
13. Eager Lake, named after FO. W. H. Eager.
14. McGavock Lake, named after FO. J. J. McGavock, of Winnipeg.
15. Hunter Lake, named after Pte. Jack Hunter, of Neepewa.
16. Finch Lake, named after SL. G. H. Finch, of Birtle.
17. Matheson Lake, named after Lieut. Donald John Matheson.
18. Kadeniuk Lake, named after Pte. Walter Kadeniuk, of Winnipeg.
19. Dobbyn Lake, named afterFO. J. L. Dobbyn, of Dand.
20. Watt Lake, named after FO. R. H. Watt, of Winnipeg.
21. Runner Lake, named after PO. J. M. Runner, of Treherne.
22. McCallum Lake, named after Major Douglas H. McCallum.
23. Reid Lake, named after Lieut. Edward James Reid, of Souris.
24. Van Hende Lake, named after Sgt. Marcel O. Van Hende.

There are more than 4,200 lakes, islands, bays and other geographical features named after Manitoba's war dead.
