Geocache Description:

Totem Bight State Park is a great place to explore and learn about the local Alaska Native Culture.  Enjoy the totem poles and the clan house while you are here.  Alaska State Parks Permit #15-KA-1994 Geocache AK. Please be respectful of the park regulations. There is now a $5 entrance fee to the park.

The Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people carved totem poles out of huge cedar trees to tell their stories (they did not have a written language).  The paint was made from the women chewing on salmon eggs then mixing with natural minerals for color.  30 to 50 people would live in a Clan House this size.  The native culture and stories are fascinating, I hope you learn something new while you are here.

The cache is a plastic container with camo tape, there is room for Travel Bugs.  Behind the Restoration Building there is a large fallen tree, there is no need to climb over the tree or go to the back side of it.  We get very high winds of up to 100 miles per hour and many times it blows our trees down which is what happened here.
