The cache is a small lock 'n' lock container. It is part of a trail of caches along Highway 10 leading to Country Legends Manitoba 2015 (WestCan 5) in Dauphin.
Born the son of Canadians living in Los Angeles, California, Stanley Howard Knowles visited the Canadian prairies when he was 16 years old and chose to stay, studying philosophy and economics at Brandon University. At the age of 21, Knowles heard J. S. Woodsworth speak and was heavily influenced by his belief in the cause of social justice.
A supporter of the CCF and later the NDP political parties, Knowles was first elected to the House of Commons in a 1942 by-election for Winnipeg North Center, the seat that had just been vacated by the death of J. S. Woodsworth. Knowles continued to represent that riding until 1984 with the exception of the period 1958-1962 when a sweep by John Diefenbaker wiped out the CCF party. Knowles helped raise the NDP from the ashes and served as the House Leader for that party from 1962 until 1981.
Although the Canadian Parliament was dominated by the Liberals for much of Stanley Knowles' tenure, he was able to use his skill in parliamentary procedure and the balance of power for minority governments to push the adoption of a number of progressive measures. In 1970 Stanley Knowles was honored with his appointment to Chancellor of Brandon University, a title he held until 1990. The student union building on campus bears his name along with that of Tommy Douglas.
