From the very first time Charles Rankin surveyed the 200 acres that were to become the town of Meaford, he must have seen the heart that beat within the land. The early days of Meaford saw bustling industry, mills, shops, restaurants and a large harbour front that thrived off of the shipping industry in the 1800’s. People living in Meaford rode the high of this booming time period and thought it would last forever! Sadly though, like many other parts of our country, fire would claim the mills and the landscape of the town would change.
Out of the ashes of those fires in the early part of the 1900’s would rise the town and later the municipality that we now know as Meaford. Our harbour front still plays a major part in the industry, now instead of mills and a port for shipping, you find pleasure boats and tourists. The town of Meaford still finds itself bustling with activity, from the invasion of scarecrows each fall to the, outdoor summer and winter activities, there is always something to do. The heart of Meaford resides in all that visit and all that call it home.
