Geocache Description:

Irish immigrant, publican and Hawthorn land owner Michael Lynch built Grace Park House in 1858 on a massive 38 hectares (95 acres) bounded by Power Street to the west, Barkers Road to the north, Glenferrie Road to the east and down to Burwood Road in the south ( where the original entrance drive was located ).

The prominent Colonial architect John Gill designed the first section of the house constructed in the Georgian style and it is an important example of Gill’s work.

It was extended in the early 1870s and in the 1890s additions and alterations were commissioned when the house accommodated the Grace Park Ladies College and are historically important for their association with the rise of private educational facilities for girls in the Colony and the emergence of an upper middle class.

In 1884 the Estate was subdivided to comprise of a residential subdivision to the north and public gardens and sporting facilities to the south. The residential portion of the estate contains three curved crescents, intersecting streets and Mary Street as the northern boundary. Streets are tree-lined and contain a fine collection of Victorian and Edwardian houses. A curved portion of open land runs through the estate, once the site of the Kew railway line.

The starting coordinates are the location of Grace Park House.
