Geocache Description:

Oiz

The Oiz is 1026.40 m and is popularly known as "the viewpoint of Biscay". The Oiz is one of the most mythical summits of the historical territory of Biscay. The summits of Oiz part of an elongate I crests whose waters end up in several different river basins: Ibaizabal, Artibai, Read, Oca and Deva, all of the Cantabrian. Its privileged location and its height make it possible from its summit ridge and a space can be visually controlled wryly described by some as "infinite".

Description

The Oiz has an easily identifiable even from afar silhouette, silhouette accentuated by high communications towers that stand on the summit and the long row of wind towers that runs along the crests. Oiz still has spots hardwood and mixed forest, especially on the slopes N, E, and SE. High, totally deforested areas are true pastures where sheep graze peacefully, horses and cows. Wildlife is also remarkable, with numerous species of mammals such as wild boar and deer. Small isolated examples of holly, and shrubs such as heather and gorse, paving the way, sometimes gritty, it shows the innards of a sandstone subsoil, in sharp contrast to the moles limestone mountains of Durango. At the summit a geodesic vertex of first order is placed.

History and legend

The crest of Oiz is one of the most emblematic of the history of Vizcaya and Euskal Herria places. During part of prehistory, these places were inhabited by pastoralist people who have left their mark on the existing prehistoric monuments. Oiz is one of the bocineros mountains of Vizcaya, from which, in ancient times, calls to the "Batzarrak" or Boards of Guernica were made. This call was made by bonfires and the tolling of horn speakers. Oiz is also myth and legend; because also here, Mari, "Lady of Anboto" dwells. Tradition has it that every seven years Mari moved from Anboto to Oiz, and the weather, good or bad, and harvests, abundant or scarce, will depend on where it is located.

The wind park

On the ridge of Mount Oiz is located a wind farm with an installed capacity of 34 MW. This park consists of 40 wind turbines of 850 KW each, weighing 60 tons, a rotor diameter of 52 and 58 m (depending on model) and 52 meters high. Have a starting speed of 4 m / s cutting speed of 25 m / s .. It was the first park to generate electricity by means of wind Vizcaya. Opening a service road at the foot of the generators that runs along the ridge of Oiz has enabled to complete a series of mountain bike tours, which were previously interrupted, thus opening the possibility of performing many mountain bike routes quite difficult. The average wind speed in the park is 7.3 m / s., With an average annual production equivalent to the consumption of 85,000 households.

An accident that marked Euskadi

The February 19, 1985 saw the worst air accident in Euskadi, the Boeing 727 Alhambra in Granada Iberia flying about 300 meters below the established minimum safe altitude on the respective chart approach that handle the pilots to follow, Bilbao pre-landing instructions. In the area where the accident occurred, the minimum safe altitude is 4,360 feet (1321 meters), but the aircraft collided with a TV antenna installed on the top of Mount Oiz, whose height is 1026 meters (3,386 feet). From the plane, radioed not any anomaly along the entire route. The aircraft, registration EC-DDU, that carried out the flight IB-610, took off from Madrid at 08.47 hours and was due to arrive at the airport in Sondika to 0935 hours. The apparatus as towards Bilbao, stood at an altitude of 26,000 feet (7879 meters). About 100 kilometers from Bilbao, the plane flew over the beacon called Domingo because it is in the vicinity of Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja). By going through that point, the plane began to descend, as usual on such flights. Once the apparatus, approaching Bilbao, down to 15,000 feet (4545 meters), the plane took and radio contact with the control tower of the airport of Sondika. It was 09.18 hours. Since Sondika, at 09.25 hours, controllers authorized the commander 727, Jose Luis Patiño, to initiate the approach maneuver. At the time of the approach, at a lower altitude than is required and slightly deviated from its route, the mountain-and is even represented in the Charter of Aproximación-, he hits ETB antenna installed on Mount Oiz. In 0930, Sondika controllers radioed the plane to know their status, but got no response. The first to arrive on scene encountered a daunting picture: the remains of 148 victims scattered along two kilometers. Only an intact body was found at the cemetery creepy: that of a deceased person who was moved to Bilbao in his coffin in the cargo hold.

The Route

The route to the top is 12 km from the parking lot, where we leave the car and where the first cache route. The route is designed to make cycling as it is by a cement track without excessive slopes except some stretches where we can take with us. In addition there is a cache every 600-700m with which every so often we take a break. Thus the total length of the route will also be lower because it can return from the top to the parking lot shortly bike down. The other option is done on foot and enjoy the magnificent views that will give us the climb up Mount Oiz antennas.

Before you start make sure you take the route tweezers to logs to resist out, a pencil or pen, sandwich, water and eager to have fun... And if you know how to solve the Rubik's cube, you will have access to Bonus Oiz.
