CH - Sunset Drive-In Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

speedog: Am putting this one out to the pasture, as much as I would like to keep it going it has proven to be a more troublesome locale for a cache then I would've ever imagined. Maybe something in the future along the lines of a multi like someone suggested, Thanks to all the geocachers who found this one, I hope it provided a bit of entertaining Calgary history.

Geocache Description:

As I've always been interested in Calgary history and especially that of which is so rapidly disappearing from our ever changing city landscape, I've created this geocache in honor of what was one of Calgary's drive-in movie theaters - the Sunset Drive-in. The Sunset Drive-In opened in 1950 and enjoyed a 35 year run until it was closed in 1985 at which time it was operating as a dual-screen operation. The bulk of the land area which was once occupied by this drive-in is now owned by the Centre Street Church and it's where they built their most recent facility.

Where this cache is located would've been the entrance road for this drive-in in it's later years - one entered off of Edmonton Trail and proceeded west into the drive-in yard and I believe the pavement immediately north of this cache's location may very well be part of this drive-in's entrance. There is still one set of street lights to the ENE of this cache's location - disconnected but still standing behind a chain link fence. In it's early years, one would have had a corded speaker that one hung on one's vehicle window - in the latter years, everything was converted to a low power FM operation which meant you listened to the movie through your vehicle's radio and this meant that a lucky few could watch and listen for free while parked in certain spots on 40th Avenue to the north of the drive-in property

Update: Cache container has been changed and the additional camouflage no longer exists - the original container and camouflage were proving just too time consuming to maintain whether it be due to wind, not so careful geocachers or just muggles. The new cache container still has the same coordinates but is placed in an area which will be much less obvious to muggles. The cache container is larger than the old one and will accommodate small TB's. You will have to bring your own pen or pencil as this cache is still too small to contain any type of writing instrument.

There is plenty of parking available on the adjacent street and some discretion may have to be used when trying to locate this cache depending on the time of day one seeks out this cache - early mornings or evenings are probably best to avoid being seen or questioned by muggles. Please also note there is a fairly steep slope right in the vicinity of this cache and as such, people will have to mindful of where they step so as to avoid a tumble.

Please leave this geocache in the spot you found it with all associated camouflage (if there) in place so as to make the search just as much fun for the next person. Camouflage does not need to be moved/removed to to access cache.

In the picture below, the Sunset Drive-In would have been located in the red circled area - this picture would've been taken before 1983.
