Geocache Description:

You've heard of Sidetracked? Well now we have 'Derailed' - caches where stations used to be. This is intended to be a quick cache-and-dash opportunity whilst waiting for a train. You can wait for a train, you might even see one, but you won't be able to catch it. You will need to bring your own pen/pencil.Please park responsibly whilst searching for this cache.

Gresley railway station was a railway station at Castle Gresley, near Swadlincote on the Leicester to Burton on Trent line. The station is no longer there, but was originally at N52 45.426 W001 34.836. You are looking at the original site from GZ.

The line was built for the Midland Railway and the station opened on 2 October 1848. Originally sited to the west of the road bridge, the station was resited to the east of the bridge in 1869. Gresley station was closed on 7 September 1964 but the line remains open for freight traffic.Fom 1906 to 1927, a branch of the Burton and Ashby light railway terminated at the station.

In the 1990s BR planned to restore passenger services between Leicester and Burton as the second phase of its Ivanhoe line project. However, after the privatisation of British Rail in 1995 this phase of the project was discontinued. In 2009 the Association of British Railways published a £49 million proposal to restore passenger services to the line that would include reopening a station at Gresley to serve the town of Swadlincote. We are still waiting with baited breath and if they would like to hurry up it would assist with our days 'on tour' to be able to catch a train from the end of the road! Castle Gresley is a village and civil parish about 1.5 miles (2.4km) southwest of the centre of Swadlincote in Derbyshire. The village is about 1 mile west of the village of Church Gresley. The name 'Gresley' comes from Albert Greslea, the first baron of Manchester, who was prominent throughout the Midlands. Castle Gresley has the remains of a Motte and Bailey castle known locally as Castle Knob which can be seen if you are standing at GZ. This is a Scheduled Monument You could also go and have a look at the Cache at Sir Gresley's Castle Knob whilst you are in the area.
