Geocache Description:

In 1978 The North Downs Way was officially opened after years of planning.  For one man George Cache it was a day he had been waiting for.

George was aiming to be the first person to walk the entire route, on hearing of it’s opening he hurriedly spent a few days getting his things together and headed to Farnham to start his walk.

For the first few days everything went to plan.  On day 4 he left Caterham, by this time the media had heard of his story. He passed the cottages at Winders Hill, where all the residents had come out to cheer him on, this was the last time George was ever seen.

Nobody knows for sure what happened to George, some say he disappeared to start a new life, some believe that he somehow became lost and disoriented, falling into one of the old mines from the 1800’s that are numerous around the area.

Over the years people have reported seeing a ghostly figure walking the North Downs Way, many believe this to be the ghost of George Cache hopelessly trying to find the correct way.

In 2003 Georges best friend was worried that people were forgetting George, so he placed a small memorial in his memory at the given co-ordinates, close to the spot where he was last seen.
