Attractions of the Roodebeek park Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Klaye: I checked the place today and decided to archive. Chiefly because the plastic lid "corking" the handrail, behind which the cache was hidden, is gone (together with the cache). The fact that someone (could be kids) takes the cache is one thing (and it happened already). That someone takes the cache out and then just throws it on the ground is a bit worse (happened at least once). But taking the part of the handrail is the last bit. I even don't know where would I buy a replacement.

To cut the long story short: thanks for all your logs for the last 10 months and I'm clearing the place for another cache.

Geocache Description:

On the southern edge of the Roodebeek park, one may find several attractions, more for kids, but adults may enjoy some of them too. This is supposed to be an easy multicache, aiming to show you a 'hidden gem' of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Do not expect complicated questions or difficult calculations. It's best at daytime, but technically, it can be done 24/7 in roughly 30 minutes.

The Roodebeek Park, besides its function as a park or small forest, contains also a playground, an arboretum a small zoo and the Municipal Museum of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. This all is concentrated on relatively small area, where you can come for a short walk, or spend half a day (probably with kids).

More information about the zoo, the arboretum and the museum can be found on the spot. Each way-point should give you a number(s), which is to be used for the calculation of the final coordinates.

Playground

The playground is open from 10:00 to 19:00 (possibly subject to change) and kids can enjoy sand, swings, slide or climbing frames. The answers to the two questions (to get the value of A and B) are possible even if the playground is closed.

WP1: Guardian (value of A) & Garbage bins (value of B)

There is an animal, which should stay outside of the playground and guard the happy kids playing inside. The animal is:

a) snake (A=0)     b) dog (A=1)     c) Rothschild's giraffe (A=7)

Litter is not a toy and should be thrown to the litter bin. To fit the playground environment, the four bins are in the shape of:

a) dog (B=3)     b) frog (B=0)     c) hippopotamus (B=9)

Arboretum

The arboretum is not an isolated attraction, but rather the different trees are dispersed in almost the whole area of the Roodebeek Park. There is a board with the names of all trees and a map of their exact location. Small detailed information is under each tree. There are both native and exotic species.

WP2: Arboretum board (value of C)

How many tree species are in the Arboretum and are shown on the board? (or what is the number of Liquidambar sturaciflua?)

a) 19 tree species (C=9)     b) 21 tree species (C=6)     c) 23 tree species (C=3)

Zoo

The zoo, run by Natura Roodebeek, is small, but with both native and exotic, small and bigger animals. Basic information about the animals (name, picture, location) is displayed on small information panels.

WP3: Zoo (value of D)

The WP3 is somewhere in the middle of the zoo, from where you can see some of the cages and animal-runs. All the animals in the zoo belong to the subphylum Vertebrata, but what classes of vertebrates are in the zoo?

a) only fish (D=4)     b) fish, mammals, birds (D=5)     c) reptiles and amphibians (D=6)

Municipal Museum

The house, where the Municipal Museum is based, was built by Emile Devos roughly more than 100 years ago. Initially, the house appeared as a typical Brabant construction. It was bequeathed to the municipality in 1942, on the condition that the house is turned into a museum (and the gardens to park).

WP4: Devos House (value of E)

You should be standing near an information board in French, Dutch and English, so it should not be any problem to find out when was the Devos house built?

a) in 1884 (E=7)     b) in 1892 (E=6)     c) in 1903 (E=5)

The cache

When you fill in A to E in the following way, you obtain the final coordinates:

N 50° 5A.BCA E 004° 2D.CEC

The container is hidden bit further from the crowds, but people are still passing here. Even if it does not look like, it is accessible with a pushchair, or on a bicycle, but the detour is quite steep (probably too steep for a wheelchair).

No need to go to the vegetation, the cache is roughly 1m above the ground. The cache contains only a logbook and a pencil, there is no space for trackables.
