The area that now makes up Hyde County was first organized as part of Bath County under the name of Wickham Precinct on December 3, 1705, and renamed in 1712 as Hyde Precinct in honor of Edward Hyde, Governor of North Carolina. When Bath County was abolished in 1739 Hyde Precinct became Hyde County.
Several boundary adjustments have taken place over the years. Among them were the transfer of Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest natural lake in North Carolina, and adjoining territory from Currituck County to Hyde County in 1745. In 1819 land west of the Pungo River was annexed to Beaufort County. In 1823 the area of Currituck County south of New Inlet which included present day Hatteras Island was annexed to Hyde County. In 1845 Ocracoke Island was transferred from Carteret County to Hyde County. In 1870 Hyde was reduced to its present day dimensions when parts of Hyde, Currituck and Tyrrell County were used to form Dare County.
All totaled, the Hyde County boundaries have changed more times than those of any other North Carolina county. Hyde County has a total area of 1,424 square miles making it the second-largest NC county by total area. Of that area 613 square miles are land and 811 square miles are water.
According to the 2010 census Hyde had a population of 5,810 making it the second-least populous county in the state. Swan Quarter is the county seat. There are no incorporated municipalities in Hyde County.
In 1585 Lake Mattamuskeet covered 120,000 acres, about three times its current size. Mining and farming interests led to several projects aimed at draining the lake.
