Geocache Description:

Bushfires and grassfires are extremely unpredictable and whether to plan to leave early or stay and defend, you need a written bushfire survival plan if you live or holiday near areas with significant amounts of bush, forest, long grass or coastal scrub.

It is not easy to think clearly in an emergency. A written and well practiced plan will help you remember what needs to be done during a crisis.

Whether you plan to leave early or stay and defend, it is important to prepare a written survival plan well in advance of the summer.

'Leaving Early" means being away from high risk areas before there are any signs of fire. This is the safest option. It is a precaution you take just in case there is a fire.

Leaving early does not mean waiting for a warning or siren, It does not mean waiting until you see or smell smoke and it certainly doesn't mean waiting for a knock on the door.

It is up to you where to go on a fire risk day and write in your plan - make sure you have an alternative in case the fire is between you and your chosen destination.

Many people have died trying to leave their homes at the last minute. Driving in bushfire and smoke is etremely dangerous. Road closures, traffic jams, collisions, smoke, fallen trees and embers are all very real possibilities.

Planning to stay and defend a well prepared property is a big decision. It will require at least two fit and determined adults, a minimum of 10,000 litres of water and appropriate fire fighting hoses and pumps.

Don't forget to include your pets or horses in you plan.
