ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Sattley Cemetery is the final resting place of many Sierra Valley pioneers. Burials here date back to the 1880s. In 1850, during the infamous Gold Lake Rush, miners standing on the top of the Sierra Buttes discovered the Sierra Valley in the distant east. The area was first settled by A. P. Chapman and others in 1851. Chapman homesteaded in the area between Sattley and Calpine. Sierra County was formed out of Yuba County in 1852.

Sattley (formerly Church's Corners) was named in 1884 after resident Harriet Sattley Church (1806-1891), the mother of Isaac Sattley Church (1829-1914), the founder of Sattley. Church was born in Vermont and came to California, via the Isthmus of Panama, in the spring of 1850. He mined a short time at Horseshoe Bend on the Merced River, and went to Downieville in 1851. In the fall he began a packing service from Marysville, which he continued for 10 years. He went back to Vermont in 1859, married Sarah Ellen Geer in February 1860, and together they returned to Sierra County later in the year. He relocated to Sierra Valley, homesteaded, and acquired the first land patent in the valley. Church died in Sierra City in 1914 and was buried in Sattley (see the tall white stone obelisk). Sarah and Isaac had seven children — all born in the Sierra Valley. Their eldest child, Francis "Frank" Sattley Church (1861-1929) built the large historic 1895 barn directly across the Westside Road from the cemetery entrance.
