Treasure. We all think about it. We all crave it. As Geocachers, we search for it. Metal detecting is also a hobby for seeking treasure. I started metal detecting a few years back and became enthralled with the hunt for lost and buried treasure. I subscribed to some publications concerning the hobby where I ran across a story about Geocaching. Up to then, I had never heard of such a thing. I read the story and it got my interest. The writer, also a metal detecting enthusiast, explained the game and told a story of his quest to find some geocaches.  His observation was that geocaching allowed him to discover new areas in which to metal detect at a later date. It got my interest, so I logged on and put in my zip code. I was amazed to see how many Geocaches were right in my own neighborhood! I didn’t have a GPS, or a smart phone at the time but I knew the area, and I knew how to read maps. I read the cache descriptions and the found it logs. I went out and actually found two caches without any electronic assistance. I was excited, so I started an account with Geocaching.com and logged my finds. I was contacted and invited to a local event almost immediately. Needless to say, I acquired a GPS and smart phone soon after. I also discovered that the writer of the article which alerted me to geocaching was right! I was discovering unique parks and places that otherwise I would have never known. Also, after attending my first event, I discovered that I was suddenly part of a large family of wonderful people. I met new friends and actually discovered some old long lost friends. Without these people, Geocaching probably would not have kept my attention for this long. What a great group these folks are!
