Azad, from 'The Player of Games' by Iain M Banks
Azad is a great game played in the Empire of the same name. It begins with rounds of minor contests, such as card games and elemental die matching, which allow the players to build up their forces for use on the game's three giant boards (in order; the Board of Origin, the Board of Form, and finally the Board of Becoming) and a number of lesser boards. In the Empire, the outcome of the game determines political rank and social status , being played in a tournament every "Great Year" (roughly every six Culture years) . Initially there are 12,000 players in the tournament, the number decreases with each succeeding round until the final winner becomes emperor.

The game Azad is tactical and played on three-dimensional boards of various shapes and sizes, some large enough for players to walk around inside them to move or interact with their pieces. The number of players differs from game to game and also influences the tactics, as players can choose to cooperate or compete with one another. As well as skill and tactics, random events may influence gameplay (often as games of chance), and sometimes may change the outcome critically.

Jernau Morat Gurgeh, a master player of games, is sent by The Culture's Special Circumstances ( a secret intelligence organisation) to disrupt the empire from within by playing, and winning, the game . As a citizen of the egalitarian and utopian' Culture' , Gurgeh plays Azad in a way which accords with his principles and philosophy , which gives him an advantage over the hidebound locals : he is the archeypal 'left handed batter'.
