The ladybugs scientific name is Coleoptera Coccinellidae.(Coleoptera meaning "sheath-winged" and Coccinellidea meaning "little red sphere".) There are about 500 different kinds of ladybugs in the US and 5000 world wide. They come in all different colors-reds, yellows, orange, gray, black, brown, and pink.
Many cultures believe that having a ladybug land on you is suppose to give you very good luck- in love, in good weather, in a financial windfall, or granting you wishes.
How did it get its name? In Europe, during the Middle Ages, insects were destroying the crops, so the Catholic farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Soon the ladybugs came and ate the insects and saved the crops. The farmers began calling the ladybugs "The Beetles of Our Lady", and they eventually became known as "Lady Beetle". The red shell represented the Virgin's cloak and the black spots represented her joys and sorrows.
