Geocache Description:

Rothkugel Plantation Sign

Small Lock-and-Lock container just off Smoke Camp Trail (Trail #324) in Monongahela National Forest.

Originally planted with Norway spruce in 1907 by German forester Max Rothkugel, the Rothkugel Plantation was the first actively managed commercial forest stand in West Virginia. The site was one of the first tracts acquired for Monongahela National Forest. Today, a series of markers along the trail tell the story of the area.

Important Visitor Notes
There is no dedicated parking or pull-off along WV 28. The shoulder is wide enough to support a car. Please be sure you are completely over the white edge line as traffic does travel at 55mph+ through this area.

Alternatively, you can park on FR 54 (Buffalo Lake Road) at a pull-off just off WV 28. This will involve a 1/4-mile walk each way along WV 28 and FR 54.
