La experiencia vivida por las tropas españolas que intervinieron en la Guerra de África de 1.859 - 60, puso de manifiesto la necesidad de disponer de unas fortificaciones estables de pequeño o mediano tamaño, capaces de aguantar las embestidas de tropas irregulares muy numerosas, bien dotadas de armas ligeros, pero carente de artillería de retrocarga, que se lanzaban contra los pequeños reductos hasta entonces existentes, contra los cuales, los colosales bastiones de Bauban resultaban, por su excesiva volumetría y alto coste en tiempo y dinero, poco prácticos, encontrándose la solución en la fórmula medieval de las torres circulares o poligonales de reducidas dimensiones y altos muros con troneras, rodeadas de profundos fosos salvados por puentes levadizos y dotadas de aljibes para el almacenamiento de aguas pluviales.
Terminada la contienda y delimitada la nueva frontera de Ceuta con Marruecos por el tratada de Wad Ras, firmado el 26 de abril de 1.860, se construyeron entre 1.860 y 1.870 en las cimas más altas de Sierra Bullones varios fuertes y fortines tanto para vigilar la línea fronteriza, como para prevenir posibles ataques.
Fortín de Aranguren: Fue proyectado en 1.865. Presenta 4 ordenes de fuego de fusilería. Tenía capacidad para 40 hombres.
