Speedy Gonzales

Speedy Gonzalez is an animated mouse and cartoon character. He is "the Fastest Mouse in all Mexico." As the description suggests, Speedy can run incredibly fast and speaks with a thick Mexican accent.

It was this last trait that got Speedy censored for a period of time. In 1999, a cartoon network stopped showing Speedy Gonzalez in any of their programs. In 2002, a spokeswoman for the network explained Speedy's absence because he portrayed many ethnic stereotypes.

Despite his thick accent, when Speedy interacted with other characters, he spoke mostly in English. The small amount of Spanish he did use consisted of greetings, common phrases and misplaced references to Mexican food. As such, the network felt Speedy was a misrepresentation of Mexican culture.

However, fans, including the United Latin American Citizens, campaigned to get Speedy Gonzalez back on the air. Shorts featuring him were brought back in 2002, and he remains a popular character in Latin America.

Speedy Gonzales is a speedy mouse character appearing in cartoons. Nicknamed "The Fastest Mouse In All Of Mexico," his major characteristics are the ability to run extremely fast and speaking with an exaggerated Mexican accent. He usually wears an oversized yellow sombrero, white shirt and trousers (which is a common traditional outfit worn by men and boys of rural Mexican villages), and a red kerchief, similar to that of a reveler in the San Fermin festival. To date there have been 46 cartoons made either starring or featuring this character.
