The Latter Day Saints began moving to Kirtland in 1831 and built the temple in 1833 thru 1836 with sandstone and timber (poplar, oak, & walnut) from nearby quarries and forests. It has served as a community center, a place for worship and education, and administration of church affairs. There were 2 thousand members here in 1938, but within the next 2 years all but a hundred had moved west. The Community of Christ (formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, "RLDS") have used it and cared for the temple since 1861, and maintain the visitors center for all who are interested in LDS history. The temple was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977, and now hosts 40,000 visitors each year.
