Being a stickler for the Rules, he wanted to make sure his vessel was displaying the correct lights. He checked and he was indeed showing the correct amount of masthead lights.
In fact, he was showing the correct number of lights altogether.
He then thought he should make sure that they are the correct brightness – that they can be seen at a sufficient distance away (He didn’t want anyone to collide with him and his precious cargo of geocaching containers come to peril). So he checked the applicable Rule number.
On checking the minimum ranges, he had a panic. Should he be showing a yellow light too? He then checked the number of yellow lights he should be displaying. Phew – that was a worry for a second!
He then added up the minimum ranges of the lights he was displaying.
He gave a quick glance at the GPS to check he was still on course and was relieved to see he was still at 55 degrees East. He was coming up from Abu Dhabi so that meant he was nearing his destination of Sharjah.
All this while, whilst trying to do the right thing – he was failing miserably in what all mariners should do – look out the window! It was fine to work out his light ranges and even look at the GPS, but he failed to spot the passing ship, M/V “Another FTF” that was travelling at high speed from Jebel Ali towards Iran in pursuit of another First to Find, with Captain TrueGeo at the helm. Captain Pugwash was totally unaware of the presence of “Another FTF” until he heard a certain number of short blasts indicating that the “Another FTF” was making a rapid turn to port across the stern of the “Geo Cache”. Thankfully the turn to port averted disaster otherwise Tupperware could have been floating up on the swanky beaches of Jumeirah before the morning!
Clearly panicked by the near-miss, Captain Pugwash sounded a certain number of short blasts of his own before putting his engines astern – clearly too late seeing as the incident had already been avoided by the actions of Captain TrueGeo!
Capt. Pugwash took a strong sip of his coffee and realized that he had obviously broken the Rule regarding the “action by give-way vessel”. How unprofessional! Capt. TrueGeo was thankfully very considerate about the whole affair – exclaiming “despite my speed, at least I could see you and take action – I could see your starboard light from 3 miles away!)
