Geocache Description:

Constantine's Arch

The Arch of Constantine was built in year 315 and is about 25 meters tall. It celebrates that 'Constantine I' won the battle against his rival Maxentius in 312. The battle was at the Milvian Bridge, ca 3 km north of Vatikan / Villa Borghese. Even if Maxentius had twice as many soldiers, Constantine was better organised and managed to push the whole enemy infantry into the Tiber. The soldiers were slaughtered and drowned. Maxentius himself drowned in the chaos when his own men were fleeing. After the battle his dead body was fished out of the Tiber and decapitated. His head was then paraded through the streets so everybody could see. As normal with triumphal arches, it was built across a main road. What is not very normal is that it contains sculptures and elements taken away from other ancient monuments. Therefore the arch is a mix of art styles. Above the smaller arches you can see scenes from the actual battle. Constantine "the great" was a successful emperor. He had studied Latin literature, Greek and philosophy. The critics claim he was a brutal tyrant, but it is clear the he also made many administrative, financial, social and military reforms. He was the first emperor that converted to Christianity, and is regarded a saint by some churches.
