The Geocache name is a reference to the vintage railway locomotive you will find here. She is The former County Donegal Railways Joint Committee(CDRJC) steam locomotive Number four ‘Meenglas.' She is part of the CDRJC class 5 range. Built ion 1907 by Nasmyth Wilson in England. Originally she carried the number 16 and the name 'Donegal' however as older engines were withdrawn the numbers and names were reused, and she was renumbered and renamed in 1937. She worked on the CDRJC until its closer in 1959, and wouldn't have been a stranger to Derry, and would have often hauled trains into the Londonderry Victoria Road Station.. She was originally purchased to work on a tourist railway in the United States, but funds for transport were never found so for many years she and her sisters sat outside the old station building in Strabane, before being moved to Derry. Recently No 4 featured on a limited edition set of Royal Mail Stamps featuring classic Northern Ireland Steam locomotives. The railway museum has a small collection of railway artifacts and vehicles, and is open seasonably, if it is open I encourage you to visit. Inside you will find her sister No 6 'Colombkille' only three of this class of engine survive the other No 5 'Drumboe' is currently in storage at the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland workshops in Whitehead Co Antrim.
The cache is a microcache, containing a log, located at ground level between the train and cycle/foot path, please bear in mind this site is close to a carpark and a road so stealth is advised, the old pretending to tie your shoelace trick might be useful. There is no need to climb on the engine or on any fence
You will also need to bring your own pen or pencil. Please leave the cache back exactly where you find it
