Geocache Description:

Another of my 'Walking the dog' series of caches which are placed in some of my regular dog walking areas and each provide information about a different breed of dog. This cache is located off the path in a nicely quiet and peaceful park. The cache is likely to be muggled if left too exposed so please re-hide carefully.

The Saint Bernard is probably one of the most famous breeds of dogs as it has an incredible reputation for performing amazing rescues in the Swiss Alps, bringing a warming barrel of Brandy to stranded mountaineers. The st. Bernard is classed as a giant breed of dog which is not surprising when the average height is 27.5" - 35.5" and the average weight is a huge 64 - 120 kg! They can be rough or smooth coated but are always the same brown and white colouring. The name St. Bernard comes from the 11th century monk Bernard of Menthon who established the "Great St.Bernard Hospice" on the often treacherous 'Great St.Bernard pass' that runs between Switzerland and Italy in the Western Alps. The most famous St.Bernard of all was a dog called 'Barry' who is said to have saved as many as 100 lives, and as a result a monument to him stands in the 'Cimetiere des Chiens' in France and after his death his body was preserved in the Natural History Museum in Berne.
