Charles Paddock Storrs, a 22 year old cadet at the University of Alabama persuaded forty-six of his fellow students to join him in volunteering their services to the Confederate States Army in July 1863. Together they fromed Company F of the 7th Alabama Cavalry in 1863. Henry Clay Vaughn, also a cadet at the University was part of this group and was elected to be the company’s lieutenant.
For more than a year the Seventh Regiment remained on coastal duty in front of Mobile and Pensacola, seeing little action. On April 2, 1864, it briefly engaged Captain Ad Schmidt's Company M, Fourteenth New York Cavalry, at Nix's farm, losing fifteen men killed. They suffered losses again at Camp Gonzales later being defeated at Fort Hodgson, they surrendered their regimental flag seventeen horses and a large quantity of guns and ammunition.
