The song
'Penny Lane' was released on vinyl 45 in February 1967 and, with 'Strawberry Fields Forever' on the reverse side, it is considered by many to be the greatest single ever released. Penny Lane, Silverstream was named after the Beatles song because, as with Penny Lane in Liverpool, it also has a traffic island.
Lennon and McCartney lived nearby, and often met at the Penny Lane junction to catch a bus into the city centre.
“Penny Lane was the depot I had to change buses at to get from my house to John's and to a lot of my friends. It was a big bus terminal which we all knew very well. A lot of our formative years were spent walking around those places.”
- Paul McCartney
The Beatles were at their creative peak, and Penny Lane summed up the technicolour world that burst forth from the monochrome early 1960s, and the feeling that anything was possible.
Please don't take the Street sign
Street signs on Penny Lane began disappearing after the record was released so the Liverpool council painted "Penny Lane" on buildings to avoid theft.

Then buildings began disappearing (OK I made that bit up).
