All’alba del 24 maggio 1915 dal Regio Esercito fu sparato a Cervignano del Friuli il primo colpo di cannone contro il nemico. Dal piazzale immediatamente prospiciente l'attuale ponte sull'Ausa. In loco esiste tuttora una lapide che commemora l'evento, nonché il proiettile di cannone, mai esploso e disinnescato, ancora conficcato nel muro dell'edificio.
L’invasione del 24 maggio 1915 vide entrare gli italiani nella cittadina al grido di: “Aprite le finestre, siamo vostri fratelli”; ma quest’azione non sortì gli effetti desiderati, c’è da dire che i cervignanesi erano ormai da secoli fedeli alla casa degli Asburgo. Su oltre 3000 abitanti, i richiamati che aderirono alla chiamata da parte dell’esercito austriaco furono veramente molti, il 23%!
Cervignano divenne comunque sede del comando della III Armata comandata da Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia e divenne oggetto di pesanti bombardamenti da parte degli austriaci. L’esercito italiano in questa occasione dotò la città di manufatti in cemento armato che resistono ancora in alcuni luoghi della città. Il 30 ottobre 1918 Trieste proclamò il suo distacco dall’Austria, i cervignanesi diedero pubblica lettura del fatto “...che da sola si libera del giogo austriaco”.
