Il Teatro Gabriello Chiabrera di Savona è il principale teatro cittadino e della provincia ed è intitolato al poeta e drammaturgo Gabriello Chiabrera. Si autodefinisce il più bel teatro storico in funzione della Liguria. Nel XIX secolo a Savona si parlava di costruire un nuovo teatro data la scarsa capienza di quelli presenti, quindi l'8 ottobre 1850 il sindaco Giacomo Cassisis diede il via libera alla costruzione con un investimento di 90.000 di Lire. Il teatro venne inaugurato il 1º ottobre 1853 con l'Attila di Giuseppe Verdi. Nella seconda metà dell' '800 fu principalmente teatro d'opera, oltre alle rappresentazioni liriche si alternarono numerose compagnie teatrali. Il primo restauro si protrasse per diversi anni dal 1954 al 1963. Nel 1967 il Comune assunse la gestione diretta che tuttora mantiene. L'11 ottobre 1999 improvvisamente si distaccò dal soffitto della volta poco meno di un quarto dell'affresco presente frantumandosi in circa 2.000 frammenti poi minuziosamente ricomposti durante i restauri effettuati dal 2002 al 2005. La vigilia di Natale del 1952 il teatro vide il debutto dell'allora diciottenne soprano Renata Scotto come Violetta nella Traviata di Giuseppe Verdi.

The theatre Gabriello Chiabrera in Savona is the main theater of the city and province and is dedicated to the poet and playwright Gabriello Chiabrera. It calls itself the most beautiful historic theater working in Liguria. In the nineteenth century in Savona was talk of building a new theater because of the low capacity of those present, then the October 8, 1850 Mayor Giacomo Cassisis gave the green light to the construction with an investment of 90,000 lire.
