Geocache Description:

Welcome to

Rolling in Mooinooi

Mooinooi started off as a modest post office and a few schools in the surrounding area. On a spring day in 1922, a store owner and some clients tried to choose a name for the post office. Just then, a Miss Botha, a teacher at the local school - Elandskraal Primary School - which is still operating, walked into the post office. Her beauty was of such striking significance to Mr. Heizelman, one of the persons in the post office, that he proposed that they call the post office 'mooinooi,' an Afrikaans word meaning beautiful girl. About fifty years later, the same name was allocated to the town. Today it houses many people who work on the nearby platinum and chromium mines.

Originally all the houses actually belonged to the mines. However around 2005 the mines decided to start selling off the houses to employees and today Mooinooi is a town where houses are bought and sold as in any other town in the country. There are also a number of local businesses located at a small shopping centre.

At GZ you will find one of the recreational facilities established and originally maintained by the mines. Mooinooi can proudly boast with at least 1 Springbok player who plays here. This is also where you are likely to find me every Saturday afternoon enjoying myself!
