ITA: Il più grande mercato coperto d'Italia ed uno dei maggiori d'Europa, ospita spazi dedicati alla vendita di pesce, carne, ortofrutta, generi alimentari e servizi vari. Il Mercato di San Benedetto è stato inaugurato il 1° giugno 1957 e con i suoi 8.000 metri quadrati di esposizione su due livelli è il Mercato Civico più grande d'Europa.
Ad oggi nel Mercato operano quasi 300 concessionari. Al Piano terra è situato il reparto ittico, mentre nel piano superiore ci sono i reparti ortofrutta, carni alimentari, generi vari e servizi.

Cagliari, città di pochi naviganti famosi, ancor meno di santi, ma sicuramente città di buongustai. A soddisfare queste voglie ci hanno pensato per più di cento anni soprattutto i mercati comunali. Nel 1886 è stato inaugurato nel Largo Carlo Felice "Su Mercau Becciu" il Vecchio Mercato, che è stata la giusta evoluzione del mercato-baraccopoli che sorgeva nei pressi dello stesso Largo. E' stato sicuramente un mercato dall'architettura particolare, con una facciata elegante che ha ospitato i capostipite delle famiglie di commercianti che ora popolano gli odierni mercati civici.

La figura dei "piccioccheddus de crobi" è stata quella che ha contribuito a caratterizzare il vecchio mercato. In un tempo in cui la scuola non era parte fondamentale nella vita di bambini e ragazzini, essi procuravano per se o addirittura per la loro famiglia di che vivere, trasportando con i cestini, da cui poi prendono nome, le spese effettuate dalle massaie o dalle "serbiroras". Questi erano dei ragazzini adolescenti o preadolescenti, spesso senza famiglia o abbandonati, scalzi, mal vestiti e denutriti, che passavano le notti all’aperto sotto i portici o nelle grotte, coperti da giornali e cartoni, e che durante il giorno vagavano nelle viuzze tra il porto, la stazione e il mercato cittadino, con una grande cesta (sa crobi o sa corbula), nella speranza e nell'attesa che qualche stanca e caritatevole signora della borghesia cittadina, in cambio di poche monetine, affidasse loro il trasporto della spesa fino a casa o altri lavoretti di facchinaggio.

In a time when the school was not a fundamental part in the life of children and teenagers, they procured for themselves or even for their family to live on, carrying with baskets, from which they take their name, the expenditure incurred by housewives or by "serbiroras". These were the teenage kids or preteens, often without family or abandoned, barefoot, poorly dressed and malnourished, who spent their nights in the open under the arcades or in the caves, covered with newspapers and cardboard, and that during the day wandering the narrow streets between the port, the station and the city market, with a large basket (“sa crobi” or “sa corbula”), in the hope and expectation that a few tired and charitable lady of the middle class, in exchange for a few pennies, enlists them in the cart transport up at home or other porterage chores.
