The Mangahuia Wetlands with Bourkes Dam were established in 1997. These are surrounded by hundreds of exotic and native shrubs and trees. Water plants, including varieties of water lilies and irises, can be enjoyed. Native birds abound, as well as swans, black and white and we are sure, ducks galore except in the shooting season. There is opportunity for a boat ride and a bit of fishing. Picnic areas with tables

No appointment needed - just turn up. Parking is roadside, please leave any gates as you found them.
The notice on the gate says not to enter unless you have been informed of the hazards of the hazards of the area - which seem to consist of: water, lake and streams, kayaks and boats, walkways across the shallow lake to the look-out tower island, small jetties off the raupo at the dam end, perhaps the raupo itself and mud if it has been raining.
The cache is a small sistema plastic lunch box in a plastic bag with a fluffy dog, a polished slice of rock, a boot, a bear, and a sea shell. Take care when closing the container that the corners of the notebook plastic bag do not affect the container seals.
