The Rally of the Rock is a mountain bike race held on Niue at the beginning of June each year. It operates in a similar manner to a car rally, having five timed stages on 4WD bush tracks, plus untimed cruising on sealed roads between the stages. On the timed stages competitors are started at one minute intervals.
Those competing range from serious cyclists down to those just looking for a fun day out – all levels are catered for.
Stage one, 8.1km, starts at Fukau, on the ring road just to the southeast of Mutalau Village. The route is generally southwest past track junctions at Patuutu, Fupao, Fetuna, two large Mango trees, and out to the Alofi – Lakepa road at Niufela. There are other dead end tracks leading off to current or past bush garden plots.
All geocaches within the mapped area as at 1 June 2019 are shown.
A Topo50 Map of Niue, PI04, is available at www.linz.govt.nz as a TIF file. This shows all the bush roads and tracks in much more detail than the maps on the cache pages. Please do not take a rental car on any of the track stages of the rally route, but ensure that you take water to drink.
This cache is between Fukau and Patuutu, in an area of bush. The cache container is a one litre Sistema.
Note that from Patuutu the Gaga cache (GC57P65) on Bike Track 4 is not far away, and you can return to the Rally stage on a direct track from Gaga to Fupao.
