Geocache Description:

A brief tour of historical East Dorset, Vermont.

Dorset is where America's oldest Marble quarry is located and is the birthplace of Bill W. (Wilson), co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. East Dorset is the setting of the Wilson House (large red building).  It is close to the cache and is across the intersection of Mad Tom Road and Village Street.  See the plaque on the corner.

The East Dorset marble quarry had been established by Bill W.'s great grandfather and stayed in the family for three generations. Marble from these quarries provided stone for the New York Public Library Main Branch. Walk through the Village on the marble sidewalks.

The Battenkill or Battenkill River is a 59.4-mile-long river that originates in East Dorset and flows south and is a tributary of the Hudson River. As it flows through East Dorset, it picks up waters from Peru's Mad Tom and Little Mad Tom brooks.

The cache is near the old post offfice and the East Dorset Congregational Church and by the historic Vermont Railway System North/South railroad track.

Sit and enjoy the views.  The cache is both kid-friendly and winter-friendly.

Please be sure to BYOP to sign the log, as there isn't one in the cache.
