1. POKER RUN
What is a Poker Run?
A Poker Run is an event in which players visit specific locations where they collect cards and use those cards to get the best poker hand possible. One does not need to know much about poker in order to play, other than how the hands are ranked for scoring. A Geo Poker Run is a poker run, geocaching style.
In Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 we are playing draw poker, and there are fifteen geocaches. Each cache container has 52 numbered poker chips which represent playing cards in a standard deck, and the number written on each chip identifies which playing card it stands for. The identify of the chips will be revealed at the end of the game.
Our poker run is a family-friendly game for any geocacher who wants to play poker, and there is no cost to play. This game is purely for the enjoyment of geocaching and socializing.
Register Online
The game is limited to 60 player numbers, but we may increase it if we get a lot of response. If you are planning on attending and playing in the Comox Valley Geo Poker 2015 event, you are encouraged to register early..
If your geocaching identify represents more than one person, each person can participate. A player number can be an individual, a pair, a family or a group—it's up to you.
You may click Send Email (or follow the CVPokerRun owner link at the top of this page) and send us an email and state your geocaching name, the number of players (player numbers) and the first name(s) for each. Or you could just log a "will attend" on the event page. We will contact you to confirm the registration.
Player numbers will be handed out as the emails are received, and we will email you back a confirmation.
Registering online is just a reservation and does not guarantee you a spot. To be in the game, you must pick up your game sheet before the end of the morning briefing or you may lose your place. We are allowing for late registration if there is room, or if registered players don't sign in. If you haven't registered you can show up on event day and you might be able to play. Check this page for player space availability.
This is What Will Happen
The event will held on Sunday the 16th of August at Kitty Coleman Beach north of Courtenay and we will all meet at 10am. Each player will sign in and will be given a game sheet which will outline the rules of Comox Valley Geo Poker 2015 and list the details of the geocaches in the game.
At 10:30 Big Zed will be giving a briefing and the rules will be reviewed. Any players who haven't picked up their player sheets by the end of the briefing will lose their place if non-registered geocachers wish to play.
Big Zed will stay at Kitty Coleman Beach until all players have begun or until noon (whichever comes first) and he will be back later in the day.
At 3pm you may return to Kitty Coleman Beach and play your poker hand. Five chips make up your hand. This is draw poker, so if you have more than five chips then they can be used in case you want to draw more cards.
The Rules
In order to make the game run smoothly and be fair to all players, the Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 must have some rules that apply to each player. Here they are:
1. Enjoy Yourselves
The Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 is a fun event. It is not a race. There are no prizes for being first or last to finish. There's lots of time, so spend the day geocaching with friends, and most of all have a good time. It is not gambling and there is no exchange of money.
2. Visit the Caches
The Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 consists of fifteen geocaches, and each geocache contains 52 chips, for each card in the deck. Visit each geocache, sign the log book and register your find on Geocaching.com in order to get a smilie. We're not just playing poker, we're also geocaching.
3. Gather the Chips
Five chips make up your hand, and five additional chips may be used for drawing more cards to improve your hand if you wish.
4. Only Between Five and Ten Chips
Do not bring back fewer than five or more than ten chips.
5. Just One Chip Per Container
Do not take more than one chip from any container.
6. Empty Container
If a cache container has no chips then you'll have to get your chip from another. There are enough chips in the game for all players.
7. Report Back
Bring chips with player sheet back after 3pm. Choose five to make up your hand and your cards will be presented. This is draw poker and the extra chips represent cards from which you can draw. As long as you have extra chips, you can keep discarding and drawing cards. You may not use other players' chips

Here's an Example
Johnny Cache is a famous country singer who likes geocaching. He wanted to attend the Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 but he didn't register because he was finishing a concert tour and was too busy. So he just showed up at the event Sunday morning hoping to be able to play. Mike Muggle, an avid geocacher who loves finding night caches, carelessly slept in and missed the briefing, even though he was the first to email us to register. Mike lost his spot so we gave it to Johnny.
Over the course of the next few hours, Johnny found only thirteen of the fifteen caches. This is because he's not as experienced since he's new to geocaching, and he had nobody to go with. When he showed up to have his hand counted in the afternoon, he had nine chips. So we laid out his chips and he picked five for his hand. He would have had the tenth chip he was allowed but he kept finding empty containers, and then he ran out of time.
Johnny was dealt the 6♥, 6♣, 8♥, 9♠ and Q♦. He didn't know if he should try for a straight or see if he could get more sixes. So Johnny discarded the queen and was given another 6♥. (Remember, we're playing with multiple decks so it is possible to get two cards the same.)
Now Johnny had three choices: he could either (1) throw away the eight and the nine and keep trying for sixes, (2) throw away two of the sixes and try to finish the straight, or (3) throw away the six of clubs and the nine of spades and hope to get more hearts and make a flush. He only had three draw cards left.
Johnny tossed out the eight and the nine and was dealt the 6♠ and another 6♣. Wow, five of a kind! Johnny kept this hand and didn't use the last of his draw cards.
Johnny ended up winning the Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 and gave us all free tickets to his next concert because he's such a great guy.
The Caches Will Still Be There
After the event, details of the Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015 caches on the Geoaching.com map will be posted for all to see. We will keep the caches online after the event, so if you didn't find all fifteen caches on the day of the event then you'll still be able to look for them later and claim your finds.
2. POTLUCK
What is a Potluck?
A potluck is a meal or party to which each guest contributes a dish or some food item. What you have for supper is completely luck of the draw. So if everybody brings baked beans then we all drive home with the windows open.
Who's Invited?
Many attendees will be players from the poker run, but the potluck is open to all geocachers. It will be a great opportunity to meet fellow cachers and to keep in touch with friends.
What Do I Need to Bring?
As the name states, you are asked to bring some sort of food to share with everyone. Bring your own beverages, as well as chairs if you like. Hot dogs will be provided.
Anything Else?
Because this a picnic there are other things we need, such as plates, cutlery, serviettes, hot dog condiments. What else is needed to have a potluck supper? We geocachers are great at finding things that are hidden but maybe not so successful with what is obvious.
If you think of something we have to bring then please contact us. We may have already arranged to bring certain things but don't assume we thought of everything.
3. HOW YOU CAN HELP
Volunteering
If you're interested in volunteering at the Comox Valley Geo Poker Run 2015, we can use the help. We are looking for someone to hand out the player sheets at the begining of the event. We are also looking for a dealer: someone to record the chips being returned and "deal" the players' cards.
Donations
Would you like to make a donation to the event? We are looking for items that can be used as prizes. These can be geocaching-related items like flashlights, log books and empty geocache containers. Maybe you have something associated with poker that can be given away. What about that brand new Mercedes Benz you never drive that's just taking up space in your garage?
