Have you heard of the Rhubarb Triangle? It’s a once-famous 30-square mile area of West Yorkshire covering Wakefield and parts of south Leeds which is home to some of the best-regarded producers of rhubarb in Europe.
This cache is part of a series in Wakefield city centre placed by the council, and will take you to a pleasant part of Wakefield city centre in which you could spend an hour or more exploring, walking the tree-lined paths or sitting in the secret garden (if you can find it!)
Although Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb isn’t grown in this exact spot, there’s a permanent reminder of the city’s link to this quirky and under-valued food, which once had its own express train to deliver it to the markets in London and Paris.
Having benefitted from a revival prompted by celebrity chefs which helped shake off its post-war reputation, sweet Yorkshire rhubarb is now firmly back on the menu. If you’re a fan of the fruit, why not visit the annual Rhubarb Festival, held in Wakefield city centre every February.
This cache is in a very public place, so please be mindful when you retrieve and replace it.
