Geocache Description:

The Deeside Way largely follows the route of the Old Royal Deeside Railway from Aberdeen to Ballater. The path is suitable for walkers and cyclists with many sections suitable for horses as well. The majority of the route is suitable for child buggies and wheelchairs can access to within a few metres of all caches. Further details on the Deeside Way can be found at www.deesideway.org The route is waymarked using the following logo -

The descriptions for these caches have been written for following the Way from Aboyne to Dinnet but the Way can be followed in either direction.

These caches have been placed by the kind permission of Dinnet and Kinord Estates. All the caches can be accessed from the Deeside Way and surrounding verges and there is no need to climb over any fences.

It is strongly recommended that you do not park on the A93 which is a busy trunk road. There is good parking in Aboyne, adjacent to the gliding strip and in Dinnet and these are listed above. There is a good bus service along the A93 with generally an hourly service.

Aboyne Station was opened on 2 December 1859. You are standing beside the magnificent replacement building which was opened in 1896 and since the railway closed this has been turned into a series of shops.

This is an easy four stage cache. The cache is not at this location but you need to find information at three places to determine the location of the cache. This will take you on a short walk around the centre of Aboyne.

Stage 1 - You are at stage 1 and on the corner of the station building there is a plaque giving details of the station.

Stage 2 - Aboyne Green lies in the centre of the village and in August every year Aboyne Highland Games have been held on the green for over 130 years. The information you are looking for is on the plaques beside the entrance gates and also the fountain.

Stage 3 - Aboyne Memorial Hall was built after the First World Hall and the memorial is at the front of the hall and is well worth visiting. It remembers local people who fell in the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War. When you have looked at the memorial you need to find the foundation stone which is on the outside west wall.

Stage 4 - The physical cache is located at N 57 04.ABC W 02 47.DEF
