Gilbert Hendrix mustered in as a Private with Company K of the 20^th Alabama Infantry. The Captain of this company was Guild; after Guild’s resignation, Captain Massingale led the company. Captain Massingale is buried nearby in this cemetery, as well as many other men that served together in Company K.

The regiment fought at Vicksburg, defending the city from the siege that eventually took it under Union control. With the capture of the city, the entire remaining regiment was taken prisoner, Gilbert Hendrix among those captured.
