From this public rest area, you have a great view of East Ironbound Island, the inspiration for the novel "Rockbound" written by Frank Parker Day, and the location of the movie "Deeply" starring Kirsten Dunst and Lynn Redgrave.
Look closely and you can see the lighthouse on Ironbound. This lighthouse, which is the second one built on the island, was erected in 1870 and is one of the last surviving lighthouses in Nova Scotia with an attached keeper's dwelling (although no one longer lives there). It is because of this, and the fact that it is the fifth-oldest surviving lighthouse in Nova Scotia, that it is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building. This site also overlooks the location where some of the Tancook Island fishermen were called out to aid in the search after the Swissair Flight 111 crash.
From this location, you can view, through the trees, the back of the building that once housed the South East Cove Elementary School (now privately owned).
