Geocache Description:

Along the Via Verde. Big steel bridge close to the El Canos loading bays

A lo largo de la Vía Verde. Gran puente de acero cerca de los muelles de carga de El Canos

The railway line running close to Seron was opened in 1894, the Seron to Purchena stretch on September 10, and Seron to Baza stretch on December 11. Although mining in the Almanzora Valley had not fully developed at the time of the arrival of the railway, it was clear that great interest lay in the viability of mineral transportation. In the late nineteenth century, discovery of mineral reserves in the Sierra de los Filabres, in Bacares and Serón meant a radical change for the railroad, and it soon evolved from a predominantly local line to an active industrial railroad essentially specializing in the transport of iron ore. Just 3.2 km from the station at Serón, the railway company built the giant loading bays. Known as 'Los Canos', this is the loading station and terminus for the 8 km long cable system 'Cabarga San Miguel' which linked the Menas San Miguel and Dulce Maria mines with the loading bays. From here the ore was transported by rail to the Port of Aguilas at El Hornillo pier and loaded onto boats bound for Sagunto and England. From there were, still active until 1968. The loading bays had large hoppers capable of holding 40,000 tons. Trains passing below, through 90 meters long twin tunnels had the wagons filled by gravity, two trains could be loaded simultaneously in less than five minutes. As a consequence, the Serón expanded as an important hub. 1953 Cortijuelo (Bacares) and Manzano mines close. 1958 the mineral loading station Seron is dismantled. 1968 the Cabarga-San Miguel Company, closes. 1969 Los Canos is dismantled and is abandoned. 1984 December 31 last train passes through the Valley of Almanzora 1985 January 1, Baza to Almendricos Almanzora line is closed 2000 Seron station is partially dismantled leaving only a few tracks. 2000 to 2007, the station at Seron was abandoned 2007 Seron station is restored as a Greenway by the municipality of Serón.
