In Heian era military commander, Miyamotono Yorimitsu was heading to Rendaino in Kitayama in Kyoto with his retainer Watanabeno Tsuna. They encounter flying skulls. They followed skulls and found an old mansion. There was a big spider and Yorimitsu hard a big battle against the spider. He cut its head off and 1990 peoples heads came out from the spider stomach. And more over he surched spiders side there were about 20 small skulls. (From Wikipedia 土蜘蛛)
小さい頃から、毎年5月に神泉苑で行われる大念仏狂言の土蜘蛛が大好きで観に行っていました。諸説あるので是非、他の土蜘蛛伝説がある地へ訪れてみて下さい。 I watched Kyogen playes of "Tsuchigumo" at Sinsenen in May every year when I was a child. There is a few interesting stories about "Tsuchigumo" in Kyoto so go and visit some local areas.
